Leadership Development
About the Sport
Adapted leadership development activities empower individuals with physical disabilities to build confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of self while discovering their potential as leaders. Through a wide range of age-appropriate experiences, participants engage in activities that emphasize teamwork, problem-solving, goal setting, and decision-making. Leadership opportunities are offered both as stand-alone programs and as integrated components within existing adapted sports programming, allowing participants to develop leadership skills in real-world, dynamic environments where collaboration and resilience are essential.
These programs are intentionally designed to be flexible and inclusive, meeting participants at their current stage of personal and social development. Activities may include facilitated group discussions, peer mentoring, service projects, team captain roles, and leadership workshops embedded within sports practices and competitions. Adaptive facilitation strategies ensure that communication styles, physical access, and participation methods are accessible to all. By connecting leadership development to sport and recreation, participants learn to lead by example, advocate for themselves and others, and carry these skills into school, work, and community life.
